This week’s featured media mogul is the founder and publisher of Modern Stitches Magazine, Ashley Scarboro. Learn more about Ashley’s creative journey below.

You are a multi-talented individual dipping and dapping in a bunch of other expressive fields. So, what was it about journalism or media that piqued your interest?

“I’d like to say that journalism found me! I’ve always loved fashion in all capacities, but it wasn’t until my junior year of undergraduate school [where I was a sociology student at the time] that I realized that number 1, I had been decorating my walls each year with magazine ads and number 2, I was naturally a talented writer.

It was in that moment I decided to graduate and further pursue my graduate degree in publishing with a focus on magazine editing. During that time, I interned at Vibe Magazine and developed my own digital magazine at the same time. The rest is history now.”

How did you get your start in the media field? Did you study communications in college? Internships? Hobby writing?

“I kind of dove headfirst into media. Once I entered graduate school, I learned more than just journalism and the fundamentals of running an amazing magazine. I made priceless connections and interned as much as possible. As previously mentioned, I interned at Vibe Magazine several times per week. I also volunteered as a Production Assistant for Mercedes Fashion Week for five seasons, and through consistencies with the magazine, other media opportunities appeared. Modern Stitches became an official media partner of NYFW in 2017, styled and conducted several fashion tv news segments, and even covered Black Girls Rock! I never studied communications, a simple network and follow up can take you places you wouldn’t believe!”

Tell us about your platform. What’s your mission/goals? Who’s your audience?

“For the past seven years, I have been the Founder and Publisher of Modern Stitches Magazine. It is a digital streetwear and vintage publication where we strive to celebrate individualism, highlight fashionable content and is a blueprint to all things sustainable. We have several thousand visitors who visit our website monthly and that usually consists of fashion enthusiasts, mostly women and those looking to find locations to shop vintage in their local areas.”

So far throughout your career, what has been your proudest personal media moment?

“Every opportunity I receive is a proud moment because they aren’t given to everyone! However, if I have to chose it would most definitely be the release of our very first print issue in 2017. The Vintage Rebellion Issue. Holding those copies of what was once just a figment of my imagination showed me that truly, anything is possible.”

What advice would you give aspiring mediapreneurs looking to enter the field?

“Some great advice I would give to those interested would be to be consistent, persistent, but considerate. This can be a tough field to navigate and I’ve received a ton of no’s, but understand that there are yes’s on the way! I always say, make sure to humanize everyone. Sure you may run into or work with celebrities but they’re no better than you. They have a schedule and so do you so use your time and their time wisely. Always Always Always show up and do your best and everything else will fall into place!”

This week’s featured media mogul is content creator and artist with an entrepreneurial spirit, Ebony Anderson-Brown. Ebony is the founder/editor-in-chief of HangTime Magazine + HangTime and Friends podcast, DJ and photographer. Learn more about Ebony’s creative journey below.

You are a multi-talented individual dipping and dapping in a bunch of other expressive fields. So, what was it about journalism or media that piqued your interest?

“I always had an interest in media and journalism, mainly because I was able to mix my passion for writing and photography together. Media and journalism especially piqued in my interest when I was in high school because I discovered that I could have a career in it.”

How did you get your start in the media field? Did you study communications in college? Internships? Hobby writing?

“I was always involved with the school newspaper and yearbook committees. But outside of school, I also loved creative writing. In elementary school, my poem ‘Heaven,’ was published in a book called, “Brilliance,” along with several other talented students across the United States. Aside from poetry, there was screenplay writing, songwriting, and short stories. In high school, a lot of my experiences and outside interests influenced my writings. There was this screenplay writing workshop my mother enrolled me in, and soon I discovered that I didn’t have to write extravagant novels, I could write short films and TV shows. While interning at The New-York Historical Society I was inspired by the artifacts and paintings to incorporate history with teen drama in my short stories. I did a lot of experimenting up until I started college. 

My professional media career began while I was earning my Bachelors in Media & Communications at The City College of New York. You could say that I tired myself out all throughout my college years and not just because of the intensity of my coursework, but the number of extracurricular activities I was involved in on and off-campus, and various internships I secured, but I enjoyed every moment of it. During all of this, I had a blog and radio show called, Unrated Ebony, where I would play music by people no one has ever heard of and interview artists I met on campus or at a music venue. I felt like what I was doing was bigger than me, and so I wanted to make it into a magazine. Something that can reach everyone around the world, and that’s when HangTime comes into the picture.”

Tell us about your platform. What’s your mission/goals? Who’s your audience?

“HangTime Magazine is a magazine, website, podcast, the list can go on because, since 2015, HangTime’s main purpose was to highlight independent artists and all their talents. We thrive to help creatives discover, connect, and create with who and whatever is out there. As we continue to grow, another element would be added making it even greater than what it originally was.

Before we only had one audience, music lovers. They just loved music, listening to it, sharing it with their friends, or playing it themselves. Soon we discovered another audience and it was the artists themselves. Our content has developed and changed over time based on the people looking at our work.”

So far throughout your career, what has been your proudest personal media moment?

“Building a team. Doing all of the work by yourself can feel lonely. I personally felt so good and proud of myself knowing there are others who want to do the work and see the growth.”

What advice would you give aspiring mediapreneurs looking to enter the field?

“Just do it! It sounds cliche, but I found myself asking so many friends or mentors how they were able to do it, and they would all give this elaborate story then end with they didn’t know…they just did it. No one is ever going to have the right or wrong answer, and sometimes the work we put out won’t always look that great, but if you just keep working at it, you’ll only get better.”

Media Mogul In The Making: Meet Zayna Allen

This week’s featured media mogul is none other than Zayna Allen. If Ryan Secrest had an African-American daughter it would be Allen! As the host and producer over at BoldTV, host of hit All Jersey Radio show “Tea Time w/ Zayna The Brand”, associate producer for the Social Push Club and correspondent for Black Girls in Media Inc., Zayna isn’t just a brand she’s THE BRAND! If that wasn’t enough you may also recognize Zayna from her cover of BlackGirlsRock! 2019.

You are a multi-talented individual dipping and dapping in a bunch of other expressive fields. So, what was it about journalism or media that piqued your interest?

“Ryan Seacrest was my inspiration. I remember seeing him on American Idol when I was younger and I thought he was cool but as time went on, I kept seeing him more and more on different shows and I would see his name at the end of certain shows with producer credits. I wanted to be like him. I wanted to be him. People overlook Ryan Seacrest and his success because they only give him credit for being an American Idol host. Do some research, you’d be surprised.”

How did you get your start in the media field? Did you study communications in college? Internships? Hobby writing?

“I attended the illustrious Delaware State University where I majored in TV, radio and film production. From there I interned at WBOC TV in Salisbury, Maryland in their newsroom. When I graduated college in 2016 I had about a 7-month time frame where I didn’t work in media at all but the following January I was a speaker for a Martin Luther King Day celebration in my town and the producer who was filming the event asked me to join his team as an on-air host for different events and that’s where I truly got my start.”

Tell us about your platform. What’s your mission/goals? Who’s your audience?

“Zayna The Brand is all that I am. I do not have just one title. People mostly see me as just an on-air correspondent, but there’s so much more to me. I have modeled, I am a producer, director, production manager, and radio show host. My goal for Zayna The Brand is to end up owning a production company under the name. I want to be able to create content for women of color and hire women of color. I have seen so many companies that have a target audience but have not a single individual from that demographic working for them. I want to change that, I want women of color to have a voice and to be the voice.”

So far throughout your career, what has been your proudest personal media moment?

“My proudest personal media moment so far was definitely when I was able to secure the opportunity of being a red carpet correspondent for BET’s Black Girls Rock 2019! It was an amazing experience and honestly, I am so grateful for the amount of black girl magic I was able to soak up that night.”

What advice would you give aspiring mediapreneurs looking to enter the field?

“DO NOT GIVE UP! It is hard! Especially when you are trying to do this completely on your own. I was the only person in my circle of friends and in my family wanting to pursue media so I didn’t have anybody introduce me to anyone or was able to get a job for me because they knew someone. I had to build relationships for myself and it is a very tedious and trying process but I promise it is worth it in the end! All your hard work will definitely pay off. Just keep going.”
