This week’s featured media mogul in the making is journalist, Dominique Knight. Knight is a staff writer for InClub Magazine, she also serves as the entertainment editor at Arizona Coffea Magazine. Get to know Dominique and her professional journey below.
You are a multi-talented individual dipping and dapping in a bunch of other expressive fields. So, what was it about journalism or media that piqued your interest?
“I’ve always wanted to be a journalist before I knew such a thing existed. My toys were tape recorders and camcorders. Writing has been so second nature for me, I don’t remember never not writing.”
How did you get your start in the media field? Did you study communications in college? Internships? Hobby writing?
“I graduated from Rutgers University – New Brunswick with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Media Studies. I created my blog alwaysrightdomiknight.com in March of this year. Being home during the pandemic has created opportunities for me that I wouldn’t usually have had. I’m currently the entertainment editor of Arizona Coffea Magazine and staff writer for InClub Magazine.”
Tell us how you built up your platform. What’s your mission/goals? Who’s your audience?
“After speaking with my mentor Alfred Edmond Jr, I realized that I didn’t need permission to be a writer and I could write on my own terms. So I decided to go for it and just start my blog. I always have polarizing opinions and feel very strongly about them. On your platform you can write whatever you want! It’s freeing. My passion will always be Black women and I wanted to combine my other love which is music. My blog focuses on Black women in the music industry. I would say that my audience are other opinionated young Black women who care about how the world relates to us.”
So far throughout your career, what has been your proudest personal media moment?
“So far in my media career, I would say my proudest moment thus far would be my official Arizona Coffea Magazine debut. The issue was released on my birthday and it was a great moment to be published on your special day. Now I can say that I will always know the anniversary.”
What advice would you give aspiring mediapreneurs looking to enter the field?
“My advice would be to never give up and believe in yourself. I know it sounds cheesy but it’s true. Sometimes that’s the only thing that will keep you going.”
